OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University defeated Southern Nazarene 1-0 in the NAIA men's soccer match of the week Saturday night at Stars Field.

Stephen Sheffield, a senior from Jacksonville, Texas, scored the only goal in the match in the 25th minute. The second-ranked Stars improved to 15-1, 7-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Alex Gang, a sophomore from Seoul, South Korea, assisted on Sheffield's goal to send eighth-ranked Southern Nazarene to 8-4-1, 4-2 in the SAC.

The Stars clinched the regular-season conference championship and the No. 1 seed in the SAC Tournament on Nov. 7-13.

OCU posted its first win over Southern Nazarene in men's soccer since beating SNU 3-2 on Nov. 1, 2005 in the SAC Tournament. Southern Nazarene had gone 5-0-1 against OCU since then, winning in the NAIA Region VI finals last year over OCU for a berth in the NAIA Championships.

“This was a big win for us,” OCU coach Brian Harvey said. “It was a composed performance for us, and it will allow us to keep rolling towards the end of the season.”

The Stars notched their eighth shutout and third win over a ranked opponent this year. OCU goalkeeper Andy Fitzpatrick picked up three saves while facing six shots.

OCU faces Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Stars Field.
